Recently we filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Attorney General regarding Brooks Brothers failure to pay workers the vacation and sick time they are owed. After putting pressure on the company and involving the Attorney General we are happy to announce that the company has agreed to pay the accrued vacation and sick time you had left when the factory closed and to extend your health insurance coverage through August 31st. You will receive this pay next week (8/7) the same way you would normally be paid by Southwick (either through direct deposit or check). BUT WE ARE NOT DONE. Our campaign for severance and to save our factory continues. CEO Claudio Del Vecchio is from one of the richest families in the world, he has the money to do all of this. The company paid $1.98 million to just 17 managers in June, what about us?
Your union is not giving up. Over the last few weeks we have:
- Received press coverage in the New York Times, Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Wall Street Journal, Womenswear Daily, Bloomberg, Eagle Tribune, Telemundo, WGBH, and others.
- Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Ed Markey, and Congresswoman Lori Trahan wrote a letter to Claudio Del Vecchio demanding he pay workers.
- State Representative Andy Vargas and eight other state representatives and senators also sent a letter to Del Vecchio.
- We hosted a press conference with Senator Ed Markey, Mayor Jim Fiorentini, State Rep Andy Vargas, and Congresswoman Trahan calling on Brooks Brothers to treat its workers fairly.
- Governor Baker is demanding that Brooks Brothers pay back the $2 million it gave in tax incentives.
- We held a rally with over 100 Southwick workers calling on Brooks Brothers to treat us fairly.
- We travelled to the Boston headquarters of Brooks Brothers on Newbury Street and leafletted the public.
There are currently several companies interested in buying Brooks Brothers. One of these is a group of Italian investors who have said that they would keep our factory. We are reaching out to them and other companies that would be interested in buying the factory and continue to make garments in the USA.
